Katie Gherard

MPA Program Coordinator

Katie manages our MPA Youth Engagement Programs, including the Floating Laboratory Program and Matlahuayl MPA Stewardship Project. These programs focus on getting students from underserved and tribal communities engaged in scientific field research and recreational activities within MPAs and their local coastal and marine environments.

She has done field work across the country, including electrofishing on the Connecticut river, working with fishermen to collect Gulf Corvina from the northern Sea of Cortez, and as a fisheries observer on fishing vessels in Alaska’s Bering Sea. Most recently she was a Biologist for the State of Louisiana where she worked on various offshore research projects, coordinated regional studies, and working with fishermen across the Gulf of Mexico.

Katie holds a B.S. in Environmental Science and Ecology and Evolutionary Biology from the University of Connecticut; as well as an M.S. in Biology from California State University-Northridge.

In her free time Katie enjoys SCUBA diving and traveling.
