NEW State of the California South Coast Report & Community Gatherings Share MPA Baseline Reporting

March 20, 2017   –   March 24, 2017

The most comprehensive study to date of southern California’s coastal ocean, the “State of the California South Coast,” is now available.  Spanning ecosystems and human uses from shore to sea, the report brings together research from more than 45 groups--including academic, agency, and citizen scientists-- to share key findings from baseline marine protected area (MPA) monitoring in the South Coast. The report provides a snapshot of ocean conditions around the time the MPAs were established in 2012, and will help inform an initial management review, and enable state resource managers to track changes over time.

Join California Department of Fish and Wildlife, Ocean Protection Council, and Ocean Science Trust to explore the State of the California South Coast.

During the week of March 20-24, local ocean community members are invited to attend a series of community gatherings held throughout the South Coast region (Pt. Conception to the California/Mexico border, including offshore islands). Join us to learn about key findings from marine protected area (MPA) baseline monitoring and participate in decision making about our ocean.

Each event will be free and open to the public, bringing together fishermen, California tribes and tribal communities, researchers, citizen scientists, educators, and others interested in monitoring, evaluation, and adaptive management of California’s MPAs and marine resources.
